Milk for the children
We want to develop the milking cow's as the most important spring of additional income for our centre and, in addition, as a training possibility for the youngsters. In three years' construction time a modern big stable with milk kitchen has completed. A biogas plant delivers gas for the kitchen.
The animals are a crossroad from Ethiopian and European races which allows to
expect opposition ability against illnesses beside a high milk
achievement.
The development of
this area was possible, above all, by donations of the "Behindetenhilfe
für Äthiopien" association, especially their Member Helmgart
Borhäuser, together with project means of the Canadian Embassy. Also
"Ambassador Spouses Group" and ILRI supported us with means for the acquisition
of the cows and their barrn.
From some of the milk we exclude the cream in order to prepare butter.
By the sales of the milk and butter we gain the means to the management of
the area. Besides, we supply the children of our centre with milk. A
biogas plant is connected to
the barrn. The biogas serves to fire a stoves in the milk kitchen, the main
kitchen, early care and MTC kitchen. Through that we are not so much depended
to price increment on fuel and fire wood.
Elefant grass is a fast growing cow food

In order to get many plants we cut the Elefantgrass and stored the 40 cm long parts for one week in water. We want to harvest in the dry time as much as possible Grass for the cows to be more independent from the market.

During the rainy season we only need to put the cuttings in the soil. After 2-3 week we can see the growing buds. The Grass could reach 4 meter high. We are going to cut it when it is 2 meter and give it to he cows. The roots develop soon new buds. |
