About hosts
Consecrated wafers are made solely from flour and water, without any raising agent such as leaven, yeast or baking powder.
The reason for this is to be found in the Last Supper in which Jesus and his disciples celebrated the Passover. This feast was appointed as a commemoration of the Holy Land of Jehovah who led the Israelites under the guidance of Moses out of the Egyptian Bondage. As they were urged by Jehovah to hurry they did not have the time to put leaven in the dough so the bread had to be unleavened - and at that time there was no other raising agent available.
The term 'Host' comes from the Latin 'hostia' = sacrifice, atonement.
